Joseph was a caring and dedicated doctor. He was an academic clinical lecturer at Imperial College and St Mary's Hospital. At the time of his death, aged 37, he was carrying out research to find improvements for patients suffering from respiratory disease. His job also involved working as a clinician at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. He qualified at Guy's and St Thomas' Medical School in 2000 and after working across hospital disciplines in London, he decided to focus on respiratory medicine. He became a registrar while working at St Thomas' Hospital and in 2007 he joined Imperial College where he embarked on a PhD to study the effects of the cold virus on COPD. His professor was impressed by how quickly Joseph worked and he was awarded his PhD at the Royal Albert Hall five weeks before his death in a road accident in June 2012.
The fund in Joseph's memory is helping other doctors to carry out research to discover more break-throughs for those suffering from emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
Joseph was always keen to inspire his younger colleagues. His professor said at his funeral: "Joseph's loss is a great loss to the future of respiratory medicine, respiratory research and respiratory education."
Joseph's life was short, but he lived it to the full. He was born on November 30th 1974 in Leamington Spa, but grew up in Devoran, near Truro in Cornwall. He was an active member of the local community from an early age, often organising and taking part in charity events. Aged 14, he and his best friend Mark cycled round the village for 24 hours to raise money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance, the first in the country.
Joseph gained the Duke of Edinburgh gold award, the Queen's Scout and the Chief Scout's awards. At the age of 17 he took part in a six-week expedition to Greenland with the British Schools' Exploring Society and later acted as a mentor for other young adventurers.
