Joseph was well known for his bedside manner and support for junior members of his team, which went above and beyond what was expected. He is fondly remembered by colleagues for his exceptional work ethic, sense of humour and the way his patients adored him.

Joseph was a unique individual, with an amazing zest for life. He squeezed as much as he could from every minute, somehow managing to combine membership of committees of the Royal College Physicians and British Thoracic Society, with a demanding PhD. He was passionate about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and his research into the role that rhinovirus plays in exacerbations was just beginning to spawn a flurry of high-impact journal articles. Joseph was destined for an exceptional career in teaching and research. He was truly one of a kind. Patients and colleagues alike found it impossible not to like him and it will be impossible for him to ever be forgotten.
