From a consultant in respiratory medicine

I had the great pleasure of working with Joseph when he spent some time at Lewisham. Joseph always had his own very singular take on life and work. He was a terrific clinician and very highly thought of by patients and colleagues alike.

Any discussion with Joseph would usually involve careful musing, a terrier-like approach to getting the facts - usually followed by a long pause and then a brilliant summation of the argument. He had a highly inquiring mind and I remember him baffling me with the science behind the PhD project he was applying for when we discussed interview strategies.

Such conversations would then jump to the latest progress on his house rebuilding scheme which seemed on an industrial scale. I never knew how he could keep so many balls in the air as well as he did. All conversations were usually punctuated with his highly engaging smile and grin. He was self-effacing, very funny, warm and a major talent. I'm just so sorry that we have lost such a man.
